Abstract:
Conceptual metaphor or cognitive metaphor is different from traditional
metaphor and is not based on similes. Conceptual metaphor is not limited to
the realm of language either, but encompasses the whole of everyday life,
including the realm of thought and action. This kind of metaphor enables us
to touch on a relatively abstract or non-constructive subject based on an
objective matter. Translating this type of metaphor is one of the most
important challenges for translators, and not paying attention to the
translation of conceptual metaphor and choosing the wrong way to translate
these metaphors reduces the quality of translation. In this descriptiveanalytical
article, we try to examine the methods of translating conceptual
metaphor in the Arabic translation of the novel "Her Eyes" by Ahmad Musa,
based on Alvarez's model. The aim of the study is to introduce a model for
translating this type of metaphor for other translators, in addition to
evaluating conceptual metaphors for translating the novel "Her Eyes." In her
model, Alvarez introduces five methods for translating metaphor. The
research findings show that among these five methods, the translator made
the most use of the method (identical visual transmission to the target
language) and (conversion of metaphor to concept) and the method
(metaphorical translation by converting it to simile plus concept) in no case.
