The true beginning of the Arab architecture was with the beginning of
the Islamic religion and the Islamic calling; it was one of its phenomena.
It grew due to the establishment of Islam teachings, traditions, and the
clarity of its purpose. It was followed by establishing its foundations upon
strict Islamic rules, without being affected by other architecture or art
unless it was compatible with the nature of Islamic tradition. Mosques
were the first buildings erected by Arab Muslims before they even built
palaces, castles or schools. Therefore, mosques were the first pillars of the
emergence of the Arab-Islamic architecture, where Islamic mosques are
considered the most notable religious monuments, and the most important
ones in Arabic-Islamic civilization because of its unique architectural and
artistic components.
The Jama Mosque is considered the first place to plan and build the
Islamic city. It is also the place that is expressed in its identity, and its
sanctity. In other words, it is a building with special religious function
besides its other roles. The most important one of these mosques is the
Prophet Mosque (peace be upon him) in Medina created in the second
year of Hijra, which created several changes affected the history of
Arabic-Islamic architecture in general and especially in mosques’
architecture. It was home for the Prophet (peace be ypon him) changed
later into mosque and a place for meetings of the Prophet and his
companions to discuss the issues of Arabic-Islamic Caliphate and to pray.
Thus, the final shape of planning of the first mosque in Medina was
finished and became a model to be followed by Muslims to plan other
mosques throughout the Islamic world, such as the first mosques in Basra,
Kufa and later on the mosques of Kairouan.
In this research, we will learn about this mosque, which has become a
cornerstone in the construction of mosques in the Islamic world, and the
most important expansions that have occurred later, but before that we
will identify the mosque and its inscriptions and the most important
architectural elements and the first mosques in Islamic world.
