Our experience of reading in L1 might have been quite different from that in L2. We are often
fantastic in reading in L1 as over time we have developed a set of skills and abilities which enables
us to do all the necessary processes simultaneously in order to be able to understand a piece of
text. When we read in L1, we often try to apply our background knowledge about the topic, predict
the text accordingly, test out predictions against the contextual clues, infer the author’s purpose,
find out the implied meanings, ask questions, try to find answers to them, distinguish main ideas
from minor ones, reconstruct the text, etc. However, we are often unaware of going through
such processes as over time they have become automatic and unconscious as a result. When
someone starts reading in an L2, he is often unaware of the possibility to use such processes.
Even if told, he has to learn them consciously and use them in a controlled manner. That’s why
the majority of students rely so much on their knowledge of the L2 lexicon when reading in L2.
They try to decipher the meaning of words using a bottom-up model of reading. It is the teachers’
responsibility to make them aware of the existence of such tools and processes in the first place
and then teach them the way they work and can be applied in reading an L2 text. In this paper, we
have introduced such tools, their mechanism, and the way to teach them.
